Roman Palazzo

This project took place during our first semester in Rome (Fall 2021)! In an attempt to solve the traffic congestion of my chosen site, my palazzo design redirects traffic from the Ponte Principe Amedeo Savoia Aosta while maintaining the historically important traffic roads of Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Via Paola. Facing Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista dei Fiorentini, this palazzo prioritizes special views of the Tiber and the church. However, the building is no competition to the church as it gradually terraces back from the front and in fact puts more emphasis on the church providing a necessary frame along Via Paola. After visiting many different Palazzi in Rome, I understood the palazzo typology to consist of an androne, leading to a central courtyard, and a loggia providing access the grand stairs. Historically, these palazzi were built for powerful noble families, but over time they were cleverly adapted to meet several different public needs. This multi-use structure contains a cafe, a restaurant, a large library sequence, administrative offices, and three apartments.
